Western Basketball Teams Fall to St. Edwards

Silver City – St. Edwards University (TX) ruined WNMU basketball's chances for a win in front of their home crowd Saturday night as both the men's and women's team from Austin were victorious over Western. The Mustang women dropped a 62-46 decision to drop to 2-9 (1-2 HC) while the WNMU men played valiantly, but could not handle the league-leading Hilltoppers' inside game down the stretch, and fell 89-79.

The men's game saw Western (1-11, 1-2 HC) hang tough for most of the game, but SEU (12-3, 3-0 HC) had too many weapons for the Mustangs to keep up. WNMU shot a season-high 60.4 percent from the field, but St. Edwards got too many second chances, nailing down 16 offensive rebounds to Western's five.

Matt Enriquez (Sr., El Paso) led WNMU with 23 points, while sophomore Trey Clarkson (Tucson, AZ) got 20. Center Kris Taylor almost recorded WNMU first double-double of the year with 10 points and eight rebounds.

In the women's game, WNMU who has been decimated by injuries this season lost another member of the stable as Antonia Caffey went down in the second half, leaving them with just five players for Sunday night's rematch.

The Lady 'Stangs, who struggled throughout the game to keep up with the taller Hilltoppers were outrebounded by 41-19 in a game that all other statistical categories were virtually identical.

WNMU's Sarah Bennetts led the squad with 14 points. Crystal Smith and Whitney Card added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Both teams will play again Sunday night in non-conference battles. The women's teams will tip off at 5:30 pm and the men's game will go immediately after that game.
